Miyazaki, Japan, is famous for its natural beauty, high-performance sport facilities and a destination were many athletes travel to for training camps and races. During the global pandemic the multisport community, including Elite, seasoned and amateur athletes, were left with very little options but to resort to virtual or lonely training sessions, they were faced with the disappointment of cancelled races, events and training camps, had minimal to no face-to-face contact with coaches and clubs and digital meetings. The world is slowly adjusting to life post-lockdowns and triathletes were delighted to return to the blue-carpet for Saturday’s 2022 World Triathlon Cup Miyazaki and Sunday’s Age-group race in Japan.

Over 450 triathletes competed in Sunday’s Age-group race in Miyazaki starting from the stunning location of Sun Beach, just outside of the city centre. Athletes were able to enjoy the best of the triathlon race atmosphere, with perfect blue sky conditions and a blue-carpet World Triathlon finish line. Many spectators lined the course, cheering and supporting athletes in the idyllic race destination. Athletes tend to arrive in Miyazaki almost a week before the race to enjoy the training landscape and tourism attractions of the Japanese city.

The organisers, Japan Triathlon, usually attract over 1,000 Age-group athletes for the Age-group event were simply thrilled to be hosting mass participation events again, welcoming people from all over Asia to the start line. The delivery team said they were delighted with how successful the entire weekend of triathlon had been and hope to welcome many more athletes, teams and supporters back to Miyazaki in 2023.

Japan’s Triathlon royalty Ai Ueda was the onsite commentator for Saturday’s World Triathlon Cup event and for all other racing including the kids races on Saturday afternoon and Age-group races on Sunday.
Ai Ueda also visited schools in the local area, during her trip to Miyazaki, with an opportunity to present to the students on sport, lifestyle and Triathlon. Ueda said “the students were so motivated and equally willing to share about their love for Miyazaki, the culture, food and environment.”

The site was filled with ambitious triathletes, all setting out to achieve race goals, personal bests and to soak up the vibe of the Triathlon in the renowned Miyazaki.

Miyazaki remains one of the favourite destinations for the world’s best triathletes, who were also eager to return to race, after not having raced there since 2019.
