Javier Gomez, the 2006 and 2007 BG Triathlon World Cup series champion and Ricarda Lisk from Germany won the ITU African Cup Triathlon in Bloemfontein, South Africa this past weekend.  Second place in the men’s race was Zander Berk from the Netherlands while South African Hendrik de Villiers finished third.  In the women’s event Kerry Lang from Great Britain came second and Corinne Berg from South Africa finished third.

In the women’s race, Lang finished the swim 59 seconds ahead the rest of the field and had to negotiate the 40-kilmeter bike course and the stiff north easterly breeze on her own. In the final lap of the cycle she was passed by Lisk. From there on the German increased her lead to win with a 44 second margin over Kerry.  The under23 African champion, Berg finished third.

In the men’s event which started at 9:00am on a typical dry and sunny day, Gomez came out of the water with a group of athletes that included Kent Horner (RSA), Berk and de Villiers.  This group stayed together on the three-lap undulating bike route but, as in the Olympic test event in Beijing, Gomez started the 10-kilometer run with a terrific pace that left de Villiers and Zander 50 meters behind.  He then settled in an easy pace to finish 20 seconds ahead of Berk and 61 seconds ahead of home favourite de Villiers.
