By Fergus Murray | 12 Feb, 2010

Marisol Casado, President, Loreen Barnett, Secretary General, and Les McDonald, Honorary President participated in the first day of the IOC Session in Vancouver.

Awarding the 2014 Youth Olympic Games to Nanjing, People’s Republic of China was the highlight of the 122nd IOC Session.  Nanjing received 47 votes to edge out runner-up Poznan, Poland, which received 42 votes.

We had two outstanding candidatures from two fantastic cities. Both expressed the spirit of the Youth Olympic Games and both were capable of staging the event said IOC President Jacques Rogge. We are looking forward to working with Nanjing and are confident the Youth Olympic Games in 2014 will be a success.

The Youth Olympic Games are the culmination of the IOC’s determination to reach out to young people. Far more than merely being about competition, the Games are also a platform on which young people can learn about the Olympic values and the benefits of sport, while sharing their experiences with people from around the globe.

The right to host the 2013 IOC Session was also hotly contested between the bid cities of Buenos Aires, Argentina and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This important Session will elect a new IOC President, elect the host city of the 2020 Olympic Games and name the 25 core sports on the Olympic Programme.  In the end Buenos Aires inched out Kuala Lumpur for the hosting rights.

The IOC Session continues through to Friday, 12 February which is the same day as the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.
